Farmers Fast Five : Lucy Turnball
Proud to be a Farmer NZ Farmers Fast Five : Where we ask a farmer five quick questions about farming, and what agriculture means to them. Today we talk to Proud Farmer and current Amberley A&P Show President, Lucy Turnbull. 1. How long have you been farming?
A fair chunk of my life. Apart from brief stints zoo keeping, handling horses and travelling, all my life has been spent on the farm
2. What sort of farming were you involved in?
Sheep and beef, bull beef, dairy, Ag contracting and horse studs.
3. What makes you proud to be a farmer?
We are feeding the world, holding up the economy, taking care of the land and producing some of the best protein ever. So many things to be proud of!
4. What do you love about your job as a farmer?
Looking back at the end of the day and physically seeing what I have achieved. A paddock sown, a fence built, animals grazing, I did that. My world is a little bit better than it was this morning.
5. What advice would you give the next generation of farmers?
Plant trees. Don’t rely on technology to do jobs that require a human touch. Innovation is necessary. Educate yourself, listen to other opinions. Marry wisely- it’s your children who will miss out if things turn nasty. If your daughter wants to learn how to tie a number 8 knot then teach her. Most importantly don’t lose sight of the lifestyle. With all the pressure to run a better business, a bigger business, to make more money to service more debt to increase production it can be too easy to lose sight of why we became farmers in the first place. Remember to enjoy the space, the peace, the freedom. We live at work, if we can’t stop and enjoy it then why are we here?
