Proud to Be a Farmer NZ Farmers Fast Five : Where we ask a Farmer Five Quick Questions about Farming, and what Agriculture means to them.
Today we talk to Kaituna Valley Proud farmer Matt Wyeth.
1. How long have you been farming?
The best thing I knew right from a young age was I wanted to be a farmer. So it was easy to leave school and follow my dreams – Shepherding, Lincoln University, shearing, rearing calves, farm management, share farming, ownership, now 17 years of living the dream
2. What sort of farming were/are you involved in?
Sheep and beef protein producer - Our vision is to produce a succulent, top quality, eating experience that has been ethically grown & sustainably produced.
Spring Valley Enterprises mission is to farm in the top 10% and be on the leading edge of its farming class.
3. What makes you proud to be a farmer?
People around the world depend on farmers 3 times a day and trust us enough to put our product in their mouths. There is no job more noble than the production of food.
Our product will end up in high end restaurants around the world or a BBQ somewhere near you.
The environment that we are enhancing, our team culture make us proud.
We have a motto at Spring Valley, “Where efficiency meets farming and putting the pride and passion back into farming”
4. What do you love about your job as a farmer?
Farming is sexy. From 1 minute to the next I can be mustering on horseback to flying in a helicopter, using high technology tool (drones, EPS spraying, EID, software programs) and helping sell our story in the big smoke.
I get to work with likeminded people towards a common goal.
My kids get to work with their grandparents and mother.
The raw beauty of our landscape/environment.
5. What advice would you give the next generation of farmers?
Surround yourself with positive people with the same core values that understand your goals. You can’t have a bad day with a good attitude. Lean forward and enjoy the ride.
